Sugar and Dental Caries: How Sugar Affects Your Teeth

What are dental caries?

How does sugar cause tooth decay?

Which sugars affect teeth?

Common sources include sweets, cakes, biscuits, sweetened tea or coffee, soft drinks, energy drinks, flavoured milk, packaged juices and many sweet breakfast products. Sugar can also appear in foods that do not taste very sweet, so checking the ingredient list can be useful.

Whole fruit is different from fruit juice because chewing the whole fruit keeps its natural structure and fibre. Juice releases sugars and is easier to drink frequently. Plain water is the safest everyday drink for teeth.
