The second sitting of a root canal is usually not strongly painful. Local anaesthetic can be used, and much of the infected nerve tissue was removed during the first visit.
What you may feel
You may notice pressure, vibration or mild tenderness. The tooth can also feel sore when biting for a few days, especially if there was a large infection before treatment.
Why a tooth may still hurt
- The tissues around the root are still inflamed.
- The tooth was badly infected.
- The temporary filling is slightly high when you bite.
- The tooth has a crack or another problem.
What happens at the second sitting?
The dentist removes the temporary filling, checks the tooth and cleans the canals again. If the infection is controlled, the canals may be permanently filled and sealed.
When to call before your appointment
Contact the clinic if swelling is increasing, pain is severe, fever develops or the temporary filling falls out. Do not place pain medicine directly on the tooth or gum.
Making the visit easier
Eat a normal light meal before the appointment unless advised otherwise. Take regular medicines as directed and tell the dentist about any change in your health.
