Root Canal Recovery: What Is Normal and What Is Not?

Patient resting comfortably during normal root canal recovery

Most people return to normal activities soon after a root canal. Mild tenderness is common, but symptoms should generally improve rather than become stronger.

What is usually normal?

  • Numbness for a few hours.
  • Mild soreness when biting.
  • Small tenderness around the tooth.
  • A slightly different feeling from a temporary filling.

These symptoms often improve over several days. Follow the pain-relief advice given by your dentist.

What is not normal?

  • Pain that becomes severe or keeps increasing.
  • New or increasing swelling.
  • Fever or feeling unwell.
  • The temporary filling falling out.
  • Your bite feeling very high.
  • Symptoms returning after the tooth had settled.

How to support healing

Avoid hard chewing on the treated tooth, keep brushing gently and attend every planned appointment. Complete the final filling or crown on time.

How long until the tooth feels normal?

Many teeth settle within days, but a badly infected tooth may take longer. Healing around the root continues even after you feel comfortable.
