How to Care for Porcelain Veneers

Dentist cleaning teeth as part of porcelain veneer care

Porcelain veneers need much the same daily care as natural teeth. The goal is to keep the teeth and gums healthy while protecting the thin porcelain surface.

Caring for porcelain veneers
Clean around the gum line and between veneered teeth every day.

Brush gently twice a day

Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Strong scrubbing is not needed and may irritate the gums.

Clean between the teeth

Floss or use another interdental cleaner recommended by your dentist. Plaque can still collect around the edges of veneers.

Avoid harmful habits

  • Do not bite nails, pens, bottle caps or ice.
  • Do not use front teeth to tear packets.
  • Wear a mouthguard during contact sports.
  • Use a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Watch staining around the smile

Porcelain is stain-resistant, but natural teeth can change colour. Limit tobacco and frequent dark drinks. Professional cleaning can remove surface deposits.

Attend regular checks

The dentist checks the veneer edges, bite and gum health. Small problems are easier to manage when found early.
