How Long Do Professional Teeth Whitening Results Last?

Professional teeth whitening treatment in a dental clinic

Professional teeth whitening can keep a smile brighter for months or longer, but the result is not permanent. Food, drinks, tobacco and daily cleaning all affect how quickly stains return.

Whitening lightens natural teeth; fillings and crowns do not change colour.

What makes results fade faster?

  • Frequent tea, coffee, cola or red wine.
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco.
  • Poor brushing and plaque build-up.
  • Strong natural tooth colour.
  • New surface stains over time.

How to keep teeth brighter

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth and attend professional cleaning when advised. Rinse with water after dark drinks and avoid tobacco.

Can whitening be topped up?

Some people have a small top-up later. Do this only with professional advice. Repeating whitening too often can increase sensitivity and irritate gums.

Why results differ

Yellow stains often respond differently from grey or internal colour changes. Crowns, veneers and fillings will stay their original shade, so smile planning is important.
