Dental Implant Healing Stages Explained

Dental implant treatment for replacing missing teeth

Dental implant healing happens in stages. Knowing what to expect can help you protect the area and understand why the final tooth is not always fitted immediately.

Healing time varies with the implant site, bone and general health.

Stage 1: the first few days

Mild swelling, tenderness and a small amount of bleeding can occur. Follow the dentist’s instructions, use medicines correctly and choose soft food.

Stage 2: early gum healing

The gum begins to close around the area during the next one to two weeks. Stitches may dissolve or be removed at a review visit. Keep the mouth clean without disturbing the wound.

Stage 3: the implant joins with bone

This process is called osseointegration. Bone grows closely around the implant and gives it a strong base. It commonly takes a few months and usually cannot be felt.

Stage 4: the new tooth

After stability is confirmed, the dentist connects the final crown, bridge or denture. Your bite is checked and care instructions are given.

What can slow healing?

  • Smoking or tobacco.
  • Poor cleaning around the area.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Chewing hard food too early.
  • Missing review appointments.
