Healthy natural brown gum pigmentation in a South Asian patient

Yes, gum pigmentation is often completely normal. Healthy gums do not have to be light pink. They may be pink, brown, purple or a mix of colours.

Healthy gum colour varies from person to person.

Why gum colour is different

The main reason is melanin. This natural pigment also affects skin and hair colour. Genetics decide how much melanin your body produces and where it appears.

Normal pigmentation is usually flat, painless and fairly even. It may have been present for many years. It does not normally cause bleeding or swelling.

Signs of healthy gums

  • They feel firm rather than puffy.
  • They do not bleed during gentle brushing.
  • There is no ongoing pain.
  • There are no sores that fail to heal.
  • Your breath remains fresh after regular cleaning.

When colour may need checking

Book a dental examination if a dark area is new, growing, raised, painful or bleeding. A sudden colour change can have many causes, so it is better not to guess from a photograph.

Do naturally dark gums need treatment?

No. Healthy pigmentation does not need medical treatment. Some people choose cosmetic lightening because they prefer a more even gum colour. This is a personal choice, not a health requirement.

Our page about gum depigmentation in Pune explains how cosmetic gum lightening works. A consultation is needed to check that the gums are healthy first.

If you are unsure whether your gum colour is natural, book an examination at Siddhant Dental Clinic.
