A treated tooth needs sensible care, especially while it has a temporary filling. These simple precautions can reduce discomfort and protect the tooth until the final restoration is complete.

Wait for numbness to end
Do not chew until normal feeling has returned. This prevents accidental biting of your cheek, lip or tongue.
Be careful with food
- Avoid hard food such as ice, nuts and hard sweets.
- Do not chew sticky food on a temporary filling.
- Use the other side of your mouth when possible.
- Choose softer food if the tooth feels tender.
Keep brushing
Brush twice a day and clean between the teeth. Be gentle around a sore area, but do not stop cleaning it.
Take medicines correctly
Use only the medicines recommended by your dentist or doctor. Antibiotics are not needed for every root canal. If prescribed, follow the instructions.
Do not delay the crown
A root-filled tooth can be weaker. If a crown is recommended, arrange it within the advised time. A temporary filling is not designed to last for months.
Call the clinic if
You develop increasing swelling, fever, severe pain, an uneven bite, or the temporary filling breaks or falls out.
