Knowing the steps of a root canal can make the treatment feel less worrying. The aim is simple: remove infected tissue, clean the inside of the tooth and seal it so you can use the tooth again.

Before treatment
The dentist examines the tooth and usually takes an X-ray. The tooth is numbed, and a protective sheet may be placed around it to keep the area clean.
First appointment
A small opening is made in the tooth. Infected or damaged pulp is removed. The canals are measured, shaped and washed. Medicine and a temporary filling may be placed if another visit is needed.
Second appointment
The temporary filling is removed. The dentist checks whether the tooth has settled and cleans the canals again if needed. The canals are then filled and sealed when it is safe to do so.
Final restoration
The opening is restored with a filling. A crown is often recommended for a weakened back tooth to reduce the chance of fracture.
After each visit
- Wait until numbness ends before eating.
- Avoid hard chewing on the temporary filling.
- Brush gently and keep the area clean.
- Call the clinic if swelling or strong pain develops.
