What to Expect After Laser Gum Depigmentation

Dentist examining and treating the gum line

Laser gum depigmentation removes or reduces dark surface pigment from selected areas of healthy gum. Recovery is usually straightforward, but the gums need gentle care while they heal.

Gum depigmentation treatment and healing
Your dentist will give instructions based on the exact area treated.

The first day

The area may feel warm, tender or slightly swollen. A protective dressing is sometimes used. Take only the medicines recommended by your dentist.

Eating and drinking

  • Choose soft, cool or lukewarm food.
  • Avoid very hot, spicy, hard or sharp food.
  • Drink water and avoid alcohol.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco.
  • Chew away from the treated area if possible.

Cleaning the area

Continue cleaning the rest of your mouth. Be very gentle near the treated gums and follow the brushing or mouth-rinse instructions given by the clinic. Do not pick at the healing surface.

What is usually normal?

Mild tenderness, a change in surface colour and slight swelling can happen during early healing. The appearance may continue to settle over the following weeks.

When should you call the dentist?

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not stop, pain becomes stronger, swelling keeps increasing, you develop fever, or you are worried about healing.

Can pigmentation return?

Some pigment can return over time. The chance depends on natural melanin, smoking and other factors. Your dentist can explain realistic expectations before treatment.
